About PHSWA
Partnership Housing of Southwest Alabama (PHSWA) is a private, non-profit organization established in 2016 to meet a critical but often overlooked need in our community: safe, decent, and affordable rental housing for low-income families.
Born from a generous donation of rental properties and initially a program under Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama, PHSWA now operates independently with a focused mission — to provide long-term rental housing options that support housing stability, equity, and dignity.
What We Do
Each month, PHSWA provides nearly 50 individuals and families across Mobile County with affordable, secure housing. Our rental rates are intentionally kept low to ensure that families can afford a safe place to live without being pushed to the financial brink.
Our Purpose
While many housing efforts emphasize homeownership or new construction, PHSWA fills a vital gap by focusing on affordable rental housing. We believe that stable rental homes are just as important in the fight against poverty and housing insecurity — especially for families who are not yet in a position to buy a home.
How We Serve
Our tenants are predominantly minority families — 93% of our residents identify as part of a minority group — and many are impacted by systemic economic challenges. Rising rents, inflation, and the lasting effects of the pandemic have made affordable housing even harder to find. In Alabama, over 60% of renters are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing — and over one-third spend more than half.
PHSWA’s work is rooted in providing relief from this burden, offering families not just a home, but the stability they need to pursue better health, education, and economic opportunities.
